Background for Shelby’s Montage
This is Shelby Richter.
Shelby grew up like any other little girl. She liked strawberries, watermelons, Slurpees and cotton candy.
Shelby loved to color, dress up for Halloween, and play with her brother Justin and cousins. She enjoyed going to parties, dancing, swimming & cheerleading, she loved to sing, laugh, and just hang out with good friends and family.
Shelby seemed as though she was destined for something else when she was very young. She always did for others before she would do anything for herself. Shelby wanted peace and harmony for everyone. She had a quality unlike any other child I knew.
On December 1, 2004, our world was shattered when we got the news that Shelby was in Children’s Hospital with a 3 lb. tumor in her abdominal area. 3 weeks after her original operation we went back to the hospital for a check up and found out that the tumor had grown back and was very aggressive. Shelby was finally diagnosed with having “Undifferentiated Sarcoma”, a very rare form of cancer, and from this point a parent’s worst nightmare was starting to come true.
2 weeks after Shelby’s 13th birthday, one of Shelby’s Dr’s came to my house where Shelby had spent her final months and wanted to talk to Shelby in private.
Shelby was excited to see her and asked when she was going back for more chemo.
Her Dr looked into her eyes and said “Shelby, I’m sorry but we just don’t have anymore chemo to give you”
Then Shelby said, “What does that mean? That I’m going to die?”
Her Dr responded “We don’t know when, but yes Shelby you are”
Shelby and her Dr cried for a while then Shelby looked at her and said,
“Dr, will you promise to do me a favor?” The Dr said to Shelby, anything.
”Will you promise to continue to look for a cure so no other little girls have to die?”
Her Dr hugged her and said, “Yes, yes I will Shelby”
After we heard this I went to talk to Shelby, I embraced her as only a loving father can embrace his child. I then turned to her and said “Now what?” She looked confused for a moment and said what do you mean Dad.
I said, I know there are things you want to tell people so now is the time.
Shelby let family & friends know that she was going to heaven to help prepare a place for all of us and then she proceeded to give everyone a different challenge. Once she was done with the family, my 13 year old daughter, who was wise beyond her years, gave me one of the biggest challenges of all. She said, “Daddy I love you very much, but when you start something… finish it”. Therefore, I have dedicated my life to finding a cure for “Undifferentiated Sarcoma”
Now I am giving you the same challenge. What can you do to help all the other Shelby’s in this country?
Unfortunately, 20% of all children’s cancer is diagnosed as “Undifferentiated Sarcoma” but there is minimal research being done due to the lack of funding.
So we ask you for your help. Please help me complete my challenge.
I wrote in Shelby’s journal one day saying that I Thank God that he has blessed me with her presence.
Shelby started her life like any other little girl but completed her life as Absecon’s Angel.
Shelby used to say that God won’t give me more then I can handle.
Shelby died in my arms with her step-mom and mother by her side on March 15, 2005 at 9:45 in the morning, just 3 ½ months after her original diagnoses.
So sweet dreams Shelby, I love you very much, and through the help of others, I will finish this.
